Nederlandse BREEAM (voor datacenters?)

In de zoektocht naar goede datacenter certificering en classificering komt de laatste tijd steeds meer LEED langs.

LEED staat voor Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design en is ontwikkeld door U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) en geeft een standaard voor duurzaam bouwen en ontwikkelen. Inmiddels zijn er enkele datacenters met de hoogst mogelijke LEED certificering; Platinum.

Uit Engeland komt de BREEAM certificering; BRE Environmental Assessment Method.  Deze is op sommige vlakken een tegenhanger van LEED. James Parker vergeleek de twee (BREEAM or LEED):

There is a lot of hype about the battle between BREEAM and LEED in the UK, but this seems to be unfounded. Both seem happy to co-exist and each has their niche areas or countries. They are even borrowing each other’s ideas as they grow.

BREEAM will probably always come out on top in the UK, simply because it is imbedded in the system. Government departments require BREEAM ratings of all their buildings; most local authorities require BREEAM as part of planning approval for developments over a certain size.

Once projects are underway that aim to be zero carbon, the likes of BREEAM or LEED may have developed to become the global default methods of assessment.

 

BREEAM kent nu ook aanhang in Nederland. De Dutch Building Council (www.dgbc.nl) houd zich in Nederland bezig met de opzet en ontwikkeling van de Nederlandse versie. Op de website staan een aantal pilot projecten. Een datacenter blijkt daar nog niet bij te zitten.

Er lijkt wel een blauwdruk te zijn voor datacenter BREEAM, met dank aan Digital Realty Trust (DRT) die de eerste certificering op hun naam schreven;

Notably, BREEAM certification for datacenters did not exist when Digital Realty Trust started to build the facility in Welwyn, notes Jim Smith, CTO at Digital Realty Trust. Rather, there was only a general standard for commercial buildings. Working with Digital Realty on the project, the Building Research Establishment — a U.K. construction industry consortium — was able to create BREEAM certification criteria specific to datacenters. Thus, companies in Europe now have a template to follow for building the green datacenters of the future.

Zodra deze aangepast is voor de Nederlandse markt, zou dit de ontwikkeling van groene datacentra kunnen helpen. Ook word het leven van datacentra eigenaren makkelijker door in een aanbesteding een gewenst BREEAM niveau te kunnen specificeren.

Dus… welke datacenter eigenaar neemt de eerste stap ??… en doet in Nederland wat DRT heeft gedaan voor de UK markt…
